祖先はどうなるのでしょう― 祖先のたどる永遠の運命は？

What does the Bible say about ancestors?
• Ancestors are very important in the Bible.
There are countless times when men are identified by who their father, grandfather or an important ancestor was:

David lived 27 generations before Jesus –
and Abraham lived 40 generations before Jesus.
So, Jesus is their "son."
• There are as many as 20 genealogies in the Bible.
So the Bible keeps a careful record of ancestors.
In fact, the New Testament starts with a genealogy that is 41 generations and about 2000 years long:

According to the Bible, some of Jesus’ ancestors loved Creator God –
and they are now in heaven with God forever.
Unfortunately, others did not love God.
Yet they are all included in Jesus Christ’s genealogy.
So we can honor and respect our ancestors even if they did not honor Creator God.
But, how should we do this?

So, worshiping and praying to our ancestors is not an appropriate way to honor them.
Won’t it be very disrespectful if I don’t pray to the spirits of my ancestors? –
or, if I don't pray to the spirit of a dead person at their funeral?
A True Story of Respect:
There was a young Japanese man who loved his grandmother dearly. He was a believer in Jesus Christ, though his family was not, so he could pray to no one but God his Heavenly Father. When his beloved grandmother passed away, he did not want to disrespect his family, and he wanted to express his love for his grandmother. So, instead of praying to his grandmother’s spirit, he created a beautiful photo album about his grandmother. His family was pleased with this expression of his love.
So we see that, if we pray to God for wisdom and use our imagination, there are other ways to express our love and respect for our ancestors without worshiping them or praying to them.
Actually, it is extremely shameful and inappropriate for anyone besides Creator God to receive worship.
John, a disciple of Jesus, writes this:
私は…天使の足元にひれ伏して、拝もうとした。すると、天使は私に言った。「やめよ。私は、あなた…と同じく、（神に）仕える者である。神を礼拝せよ。」

Even the angels of God refuse to be worshiped.
What, then, about humans?
Should people be worshiped?

But it may cost us dearly, and even affect our personal relationships, to only worship our Father in Heaven and his Son Jesus.
This is a possibility.
So we have to carefully consider the cost of following Jesus.
Jesus said:

A good question to ask ourselves is:
Who is #1 in my life?
Jesus, or my family?
(Before going further with this discussion of our ancestors, we need to remember another very important point . . .)
There is only one way for anyone to receive eternal life –
no matter when or where they live.

Creator God saves people –
from any place on earth
and in any time in history
– only through Jesus.
THEN, IS THERE HOPE FOR THE ETERNAL FATE OF OUR ANCESTORS?
Yes. God's Spirit works in people’s hearts in ways that we cannot see.

Creator God’s salvation is not limited by time:
In the Old Testament many people trusted Creator God long before Jesus Christ was physically born on this earth.
For example, Abraham lived about 2000 years before Christ came to earth from heaven.

We see that Abraham's faith was not limited by time –
nor was the righteousness that God gave him limited by time.
2000 years later Jesus talked to the Jews about this:

So, salvation through Jesus Christ is not limited by time.
That is because Jesus has always existed, even before the creation of the world.
So salvation by faith has always been available.
Do you remember Adam and Eve committing the first sin at the beginning of the Bible?
Then, what did their son Abel do?

In the same way, because of Abraham's faith, Creator God connected Abraham to this salvation that has always been available through Jesus.
Does this sound mysterious and confusing?
Well … it is!
That is because the mystery was not ready to be explained in the Old Testament.
People in the Old Testament wanted to know about it, but the time was not right.

It was kept a secret until Jesus came to earth.

Yet, if people in ages past believed in Creator God, he still declared them to be righteous!
How wonderful is God's mercy!
This mystery was only made clear after Jesus died, rose again, and went back to heaven.

God draws people to himself in ways that are beyond our understanding:
A mysterious example is what Christ did for the evil people who died in the great Flood.
These people were from the time of Noah, who lived 1000s of years before Christ was born on the earth.

We may wonder how Christ preached to the spirits of the people who died 1000s of years earlier in the Flood –
but the Bible does not give a clear answer to that question.
Rather, we are encouraged by 3 things in this event:
1. Christ can present himself to people in ways that are beyond our understanding.
2. When Christ presents himself to people, he is not limited by time and place.
3. Christ can present himself to people who are totally opposed to him.
Creator God makes himself visible to people in every country:

Some individuals reject Creator God all their lives, yet, unknown to us, they believe in Christ just before they die:

Just before he died, the second criminal had a change of heart.
He made a life-changing decision to believe in Jesus –
actually, it was an eternity-changing decision.
But it is possible that his family never heard about his dying conversation with Jesus.
But if they also believed in Jesus, they are now with this forgiven family member in paradise.
Creator God speaks directly to some people who are not seeking him, or who may even be opposed to him.
After Jesus' resurrection, Paul was on a campaign to destroy those who believed in Jesus.
Paul tells us what happened:

We know about Paul's experience with Christ, because it is written in the Bible.
But throughout history there are people, whom we would never expect, who believed in Jesus.
About 1800 B.C. Jacob had a dream about God.
Jacob had defrauded his older brother and was running for his life.

After that, Jacob never wavered from his belief in Creator God.
Today also, some people have dreams of Jesus:
In the Muslim world in recent decades there have been many reports about people who have not been seeking Jesus Christ –
but they see Jesus in dreams.
As a result of these dreams some have come to believe in him.
"These days, Jesus is introducing Himself to Muslims. The phenomenon is not limited to a few isolated locations. ...What we see is Jesus presenting Himself to Muslims everywhere. Dozens of Islamic countries and countless Muslim cultures have been invaded by Jesus' love. ...Muslims are coming to Jesus all over the globe."

What do we have, right now, that is far better than a dream about Jesus?
John, one of Jesus' main disciples, talked and walked and ate with Jesus.
This is what he says:

We don't need a dream to find out about Jesus.
We have the very words of God himself –
We have a detailed description of who Jesus is in the Bible.
But, as we know, there are some who do not have access to Creator God's words in the Bible.
God can even speak to them in dreams.
We may think that none of our relatives believe in Creator God – but believers may exist whom we know nothing about:

It was a time when many Israelites had turned away from Creator God –
they were worshiping idols.
Elijah thought that he was the only one left who still loved Creator God.
But he was badly mistaken.
We can be confident that God is completely fair and just with our ancestors:
1. Creator God judges rightly:

This applies to our ancestors who may have heard little about Creator God and his Son Jesus Christ.
It also applies to us who have heard much.
3. Everyone in the world has a real chance to believe in Creator God:

An example of worshiping the God of creation:
About 70 years ago a Japanese man was marveling at the location of his thumb on his hand. He was amazed at how perfectly it was located, which allowed him to do so many useful things with his hands and the rest of his fingers. He began to worship the God who had made his thumb – even though he did not know who this God was.
One day in the area where he lived, he heard someone telling about Jesus Christ. When he heard about Jesus, he realized that this was the God who had made his thumb. So that day he believed in Jesus.
CONCLUSION REGARDING OUR ANCESTORS.
We hope but can't be sure.
While there is a measure of hope, we don't know the eternal fate of our ancestors who did not express belief in Jesus Christ.
Without knowing of their faith
we can only trust God with their eternal fate.
This is emotionally a very difficult position for us to be in.
But, no human has the right to speak for Creator God.
It is as the prophet said:

So, no human has the right to offer man-made promises to alleviate the painful uncertainty about the fate of our ancestors.
We simply do not know.
No one has the right to say more or less about this than what Creator God tells us in the Bible –
which is what we have attempted to do here.
We do not know, but we hope.
We can only leave our ancestors in the hands of God who will judge each person justly.
On the other hand, consider what we can be sure of:
With complete certainty, Creator God promises eternal life for us, our children, and all our descendants after us –
if we all believe in Jesus Christ.
Is it more important to look forward or to look backward?
We can't change the past –
in fact, we don't even know for certain what happened in the past.
But we can directly impact the future!
Is it wise to sacrifice the future out of fear for what happened in the past?
Today, we can make a choice – a choice for the future.
This choice can wonderfully influence our children and grandchildren –
it can influence them to also choose eternal life.
And, it can erase all doubt in our descendants' minds about our eternal destiny.
What, then, of our ancestors?
They are a gift to us from God.
We respect them and are thankful to God for them.
But our ancestors,
who were all defeated by death,
and whose ashes are still in the grave,
have no power to help us.
Instead, who should we rely on?

We can only leave our ancestors in the hands of Creator God.
He will treat them justly.
BUT IF I CHOOSE CHRIST, WON'T I BE SAYING THAT MY ANCESTORS ARE WRONG?
We are all wrong!
Our ancestors are no different than we are.
We must all repent:

Even Israelites had to repent for what their ancestors did.

When Creator God makes a promise, his name and reputation are on the line.
God made promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob which they trusted in and based their lives on.
Because they trusted him, God feels a great sense of responsibility to keep those promises.
Creator God will never shame himself, if you trust in him.
Why not?
Because he will never fail you.
Because he always keeps his promises and will never let you down.
